Thriller sub-genres - Task 2

Deja Vu:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BFPLNdv9-Q

Sub Genre: Action Thriller

I know this is a action thriller because between the characters you can see friends and betrayal, this leads to thrilling action (boat explosion), therefore the characters have contributed in indicating that the film is an action thriller.

The 4 micro elements of media have also contributed towards showing why the film is an action thriller:

  • Camera - A close up of the fire created by the explosion of the boat emphasis the thrilling action.
  • Editing - Cuts between the fire and people going into the water reflect thrilling action.
  • Sound - Sounds of screaming and agony indicate action. Also the sound of the explosion also reflects action.
  • Mise En Scene - People running and dying in the fire within the frame speaks for itself. It reflects thrilling action.
He loves me, He love me not:

Sub Genre: Romance Thriller

I know this is a romance thriller from the characters for many reasons such as: the girl is buying roses and obviously in love which indicates romance. Also the mystery of the couple (delivering rose not by herself) also adds a thrill to the romance.

The 4 micro elements of media have also contributed towards showing why the film is an action thriller:

  • Camera - A close up of the rose carried by the delivery boy reflects romance between the couple.
  • Editing - Cuts between the girl riding away and the delivery boy delivering the rose adds a sense of thrill.
  • Sound - When the girl sympathetically pleads towards the shop owner to deliver the rose it reflects romance as you can see how eager and in love she is.
  • Mise En Scene - The scene where the girls is surrounded by flowers within the frame reflect romance as flowers are an indication of love.

Health and Safety & Camera Tutorial

Camera health and safety and camera tutorial.

Micky provided us with a recap of how to use the camera and tripod safely, and taught us certain new features to do with framing.

Camera Tutorial

We recapped on how to use a camera, how to set up a tripod and use the camera on a tripod in a safe manner. We also were given instructions on what we should do and what we shouldn't. For example we were reminded that we should always keep our cameras on manual focus and not auto focus, because if we did, the focus is bound to mix focus during filming.

During the tutorial, we watched and analysed several other videos so that it could influence us when shooting our own videos.

What we learnt:

Not  only did Micky go over all the various shot types with us, but he also taught us about the Thirds Rule. This is the rule when the subject within the frame takes up 2/3's of the frame and the remaining person/object takes up 1/3. We looked at various examples of the thirds rule, for example: during an over the shoulder shot (OVS) the person facing towards the camera takes up 2/3's of the camera whilst the person facing away, takes up 1/3.

We also were reminded that when recording or taking shots, we should never leave any space above the subjects' heads' as it isn't a professional look and could reduce the quality of our production.

Thriller and Sub Genres - Task 1

Techno Thriller:

i Robot:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bzg1mzwZDko

Above is a link to a sequence of the film. There are many conventions within the sequence that express to us that the film is a techno thriller. For example the convention used is revealing the story line, which from this clip you can see is robots vs humans. This reflects a techno thriller because in the clip you can see there is use of sophisticated technology that plays a key role in taking over the world. It also follows the science theory of how robots can be made to be just like humans once again following the features of a techno thriller.

Terminator:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KeniFoiT-0

Above is a sequence of the film. The clip uses the convention of engaging the audience and creating suspense. They achieve this by showing a robot aiming to destroy humans. This links to being a techno thriller as it reflects the features of a techno thriller such as technology playing prominent roles in taking over the world and also reflects science assumptions such as robots will one day exist and be just ask functional as humans. All this, is features of techno thrillers.

Crime Thriller:

Inside Man:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WRxsmqercg

Above is a sequence of the film. The clip uses the convention of introducing the main character. This helps indicate that it is a crime thriller because it focuses more on the criminals and their activities in leading up to a crime (which is a feature of a crime thriller). It also achieves being a central topic of a crime thriller (robberies).

Reservoir Dogs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvoKT481EmU

Above is a sequence of the film. The clip uses conventions such as revealing the story line and introducing the main characters. These conventions help indicate that the film is a crime thriller because it focuses on the criminals and their activities leading up to the crime (which is what a crime thriller aims to do). It also fulfills many of the central topics of crime thrillers such as robberies and murder.

Target Audience? I think the target audience is a young one such as teenagers.

"Unfaithfull"

Genre?  Erotic drama film

What signifies this? The poster represents love through the man and woman but the fact that she is pictured sleeping below him shows that they have some sort of connection or love.

Target Audience? The target audience looks like a cult audience of older age however i can picture middle aged married people watching this as they can relate.

"In the Line of Fire"

Genre? American thriller film

Why? I can just about see an american flag in the poster and i see 3 men one with a gun this signifies that there is action involved therefore suspense creating thrill amongst audiences

Research Task 2:

Two Sub Genre's:

Crime Thriller - Goodfellas (1990) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AI-VY5cC2jk

Conventions:
  1. Constant suspense created through physical action instead of psychological aspects
  2. Characters are much more dominant and macho causing rifts between each other
  3. There is a sense of violence and action
  4. Camera shots of pistols and other fire-arms
  5. violent and offensive language used

Horror thriller - Wrong Turn (2003) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjQYcfGzotQ

Conventions:

  1. Sudden alert makes audience jump up and engage automatically
  2. Sound of something aproaching E.G, vehicle
  3. irregular Villians
  4. Protaganists run and panic
  5. gruelling scenes of violence

Research Task 3:

Deja Vu -

Sub genre:

Action Thriller

How can you tell through characters:

The charectars facial expressions are highy happy and they have smiles on their faces possibly suggesting maybe they are too happy also the sound of the horn contrasts to their emotions and possibly this will ruin their day. Everyone is enjoying themselves and playing not a single person frowning, they are all engaged in doin something but you can sense through the suspense something will happen.

How camera, Mes ,editing and sound show this:

Camera - Long shots creates a wider view picturing a larger group of people creating a attraction of interest from the audience. The tracking camera also adds to the suspense as the audience start to ask where are they going and why.

M.E.S - Men wearing their Royal Navy/ Marines uniform cheering making and creating a sense of happiness and also glory.

Sound - Tyres screeching creates suspense as well as the ambigous soundtrack that plays during the begining onwards, also i think the cheering of the men who board the bus creates a sense that something is going to happen. Finnally the sound of the loud horn suddenly changes the attidute of the audience as it contrasts highklyto the happy cheers of the people being filmed.

Editing - The credits are displayed in a certain way to attract interest from audience and engage as if they are participating themselves.

Momento -

Sub genre:

Psychological Thriller

How can you tell through characters:

The characters are pictured as edgy and nearly all of the shots are close ups so we get a good idea of the characters.

How camera, Mes ,editing and sound show this:

Camera - Constant close up shots try to focus into the characters and think about what they are thinking thus suggesting it is a psychological thriller.

M.E.S - Opening scene of man holding picture suggests that he is going over some hurtful or happy memories again bringing psychology into the equation, Furthermore

Sound - The deep soundtrack plays with the audiences mind and you can immediately tell this film will be very clever in terms of certain aspects in it.

Editing - The blue writing in the credits highly contrasts the black background, it also changes colours suggesting change is highly occurant in this movie,

Thriller Sub-Genres' - Task 2

Taken 2

Link: https: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpaT8NzkLgE

Sub-Genre: Thriller

This is a thriller as we can clearly identify when there are scenes with great suspense building such as when both the father and mother are locked in an abandoned warehouse whom are dependant on their female daughter to help them escape, this whole scene is full of tention, this helps us identify that this movie is a thriller genred movie.

How the four micro-elements have contributed into making the movie a successful Thriller:

Camera- There have been close ups and extreme close ups on the guns, and the shooting in order to help clarify that it is a thriller.

Sound- There have been many suspense scenes and a Non-Diagetic sounds such as the soundtrack in the background helping to build up the scene to its climax.

Mise En Scene- Props such as Guns, Grenades and settings have contributed into making the film a thriller and to portray it correctly as one.

Editing- There have been some slow scenes where the shots are slow in order to help rise the tempo and help the audience into thinking what will happen next building suspense.

Piranha 3DD

Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HIY1FxIvFE

Sub-Genre: Thriller

You can identify that this is a thriller as it has numerous scenes where the audience are worried or anxious, there are also many scenes involving a huge build up and most scenes are reached to its climax due to the things such as the micro-elements.

How the micro-elements have contributed into making the movie a successful thriller:

Camera- There have been many close up of the piranhas coming close to the humans which creates a lot of tension and keeps the audience thinking and alert.

Sound- The noise of the piranhas may seem scary to many people which would help distinguish the difference and what the source for the thriller is.

Mise En Scene- The outfit of the people who are at the swimming pools and beaches are all mainly in their trunks or bikinis, this is leaving the people exposed to the piranhas which cause the audience mentally to be afraid and this helps build tension.

Editing- There are many fast cut scenes which build tension as there is many scenes when the piranhas are attacking and the editing makes us feel more involved in the movie by the quick cut scenes.

Collateral Remake

This is our group collaboration of the remake of 'Collateral'

Health and Safety & Camera Tutorial

Camera Health and Safety and Camera Tutorial.

Although we have been through the camera health and safety and camera tutorial incase we forgot it, Micky our teacher was called in order to go through it again just to refresh our minds and be safe during our filming as we haven't filmed in a few weeks.

Camera Shot Types
The things Micky reminded us of the camera shots. one of which main shot was the 'Thirds' rule which was a different version of the over shoulder shot where the person with the back facing the camera covers 2/3s of the screen and the person facing the camera took 1/3 of the same on the frame.

We also was reminded that there should be no space above the pupils head that are in the frame as it was not very professional to do and could possibly degrade our work.

Analysis of Videos

During our tutorial of the camera, we also recapped on analysis as it would help us during us when we were performing our work, we watched 'American Beauty' which after we then analysed the camera shots and how it was filmed, we also then watched 'Mean Girls' and analysed it also.

Auto Focus and Manual Focus

While Micky was here, he also reminded us that we should mainly keep our camera focus on Manual as he stated that if its on Auto Focus, the focus is bound to mix focus during the filming.

Camera Tutorial, Health & Safety

Camera Health and Safety:

We have already previously completed the Camera tutorial with mickey for our suede however after a while we thought it would be beneficial for us to repeat this tutoril before we start recording again as this will make us much more aware of what is good and what is bad when it comes to camera safety and skills.

10/12/12

What we done:

- We went over the types of shots again...
- Learnt the thirds rule...
- Watched american beuty to anayse some of the shots...
- Watched mean girls in a similar approach...
- Learnt about auto focus and manual focus

What we learnt:

- Never keep camera on manual focus...
- No space above person in the shot...

Overall I think this helped us to go over all the types of shots and what we might come to include  in our thriller remake.
